RAVEN Seminar
Linda de los Reyes from RAVEN (ravenselfdefense.com)
recently held a 2 day seminar on self defense. Topics covered
strategies, legal ramifications, defending yourself from strikes,
various holds / grabs and if you are on the ground.
This seminar was well received by the participants and they
truly enjoyed the tactics and techniques that can done under
stress and the dynamic scenario training. The time to take
a self defense course is before something happens!

SAVIS
On September 22, 2005, Linda de los Reyes was a key note speaker
at the SAVIS (Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services
of Halton, savisofhalton.org), Take Back the Night event and
march. Linda spoke about the need to reduce the violence in
our society, especially against females and the importance
of learning self defense for females. Linda made a really
good observation that “we are the only species on this
planet that does not teach our females how to defend themselves;
every other creature, regardless of gender teaches their young
how to defend themselves.” This is unfortunately true;
hopefully we can do something to change that!

Linda and Sara Lang at SAVIS

Professor Salem Assli was recently in town for a 2 day seminar
teaching Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do and Savate, and we are happy to congratulate

Some Team Kombat members made the trip to Hull to witness
Freedom Fight 2005. This was a huge event with the focus being

Thanks W.R. Mann
Special thanks to W.R. Mann the publisher of realfighting.com for taking the time out of his extremely busy schedule to
visit our school and share with us a 3 hour workshop on reality
based edged weapon workshop. This workshop was really unique
in that it combined skills from wrestling, Judo, Kali and
combatives to realistically defend against common edged weapon
assaults.

We look forward to having W.R. back up to our school in August
2005 for a 2 day seminar on more in-depth training on reality
based defenses against edged weapons and various types of
firearms; please check back with us for future dates. Also
check out W.R’s website, realfghting.com for future articles on our own Kombat Arts, Joey
de Los Reyes and Linda
de los Reyes’s R.A.V.E.N
Self Defense programs!
Kombat Arts representing at
the MMA Expo
On May 14 and 15, Joey
de Los Reyes and Linda
de los Reyes represented the Kombat Arts Training Academy at the first Mixed Martial
Arts Expo hosted by Jerry Chopik at the Toronto Convention
Center (mixedmartialartsexpo.com). This was an exciting event
that boasted 70, 000 sq.ft. of convention space, 20 mats and
50 to 60 seasoned martial arts instructors sharing their wealth
of knowledge.

Participants were encouraged to choose from approximately
200 different sessions! Joey was on hand to share his view of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do which included
his workshops on the clinch range, reality based defenses
against an edged weapon assault and full contact stick fighting
drills. Linda was also there to represent R.A.V.E.N (ravenselfdefense.com)
through her workshops on how to really defend yourself on
the ground against an attacker.
Next year’s MMA Expo should be even better and we encourage
everyone to participate in this great event. Special thanks
to Jerry for having the courage to host this great event!
Mark Booth passes JKD Phase
1 testing
Congratulations to Mark Booth for passing his first phase
in Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Concepts! Mark worked really hard to achieve
this promotion and is already getting ready for his next testing
which will include a lot of flight time in the ring getting
some flight time sparring. We expect him to do really well
and we feel sorry for his sparring partners! Good luck Mark
on your future endeavors!
Thanks to our sponsors
A HUGH THANKS to Kim Kehoe and Sam Nastat for sponsoring
our Fighters! It takes a lot to train these great athletes
and unfortunately sometimes these athletes have to pay their
own way to compete in national and international competitions
in order to pursue their goals. Again thanks Kim and Sam for
being so generous and for helping our young athletes achieve
their dreams! If you are interested in sponsoring one of our
athletes, please contact Program Director, Joey
de Los Reyes at 416 517-4440.

Shawn taking care of business |
Shawn and Joey celebrating |
Shawn immediately gained the clinch position and took his
opponent down off the fence and administered some aggressive
ground and pound. The fight momentarily went back to the standing
position where Shawn was able to land some solid punches causing
his opponent to turn his back. Shawn went back to his wrestling
roots, grabbed hold of his opponent's waist and launched him
with a high amplitude throw much to the crowd's delight. Once
on the ground, Shawn passed guard and took side control. He
followed up with some punches to the face and finished the
fight with a choke.
Team Bocek flawless at Bravado
BJJ Tournament
Another dominating performance for Mark and his team at the Bravado tournament on April 9, 2005. Shyam

all his matches. Keep an eye out for Frank, he has been training
less than a year and is cleaning up.

Mark, Frank and Shyam victorious!
Mark
Bocek dominated his division and went on to sweep the
absolute advanced division as well. No points were scored
on him and he won 6 of his 8 fights by submission. Mark was given the Most Technical Fighter Award.
