History
Kodokan Judo was first developed in 1882 in Tokyo, Japan and evolved from its predecessor Jiu Jitsu. It emphasizes character and spiritual development and is considered an essential part of Budo. Its techniques and movements are largely based on principles of leverage and timing. The system teaches 67 throws and takedowns as well grappling. Body control, Armlocks and Strangulation Techniques are taught in the curriculum. The sport has grown so vastly it can now be seen in the Summer Olympic Games and effectively used in MMA events.
